  • Calling Tollfree 1800 from Malaysian number

    Calling Tollfree 1800 from Malaysian number

    Most of us have probably encountered some experience in contacting customer service via phone in Malaysia. Some of the providers are comfortable with regular 03-xxxx xxxx or 01x-xxx xxxx number. The bigger ones usually have a tollfree or LoCall number. Tollfree number is indicated by the 1800 prefix while LoCall number has “1300” prefix. In this artcile, we would like to share with you about Calling Tollfree 1800 from Malaysian number, whether you will be charged or not.

    Tollfree number is a popular choice among service providers. Call charges to a tollfree number will be billed directly to the service provider (the owner of the tollfree number). Then, the telco will charge the number owner based on the volume of calls made to that particular number.

    Anyone who have tried calling customer service before should know how long is the call duration. The calls can last for at least 15 minutes easily, depending on the issue. Some phone calls may even last for more than 30 minutes. The first few minutes is spent on waiting for the service provide to speak and give direction to us. Then, probably we need to wait until the next agent is available.

    Since many of the Malaysians rely on their cellular phone for communication, most of the calls made to 1800 number will be charged. The indirect benefit of this is people will call only when they absolutely need the service.

    Calling Tollfree 1800 from Malaysian cellular number

    Our experience in using multiple popular telcos in Malaysia has indicated that no telco is giving free calls to the so-called tollfree number. This is also applies for telcos offering talktime plans with unlimited calls!

    So, if you are calling from a mobile number, make sure you are aware of the call duration. Besides, you probably would want to check on the call rate from your telco.

    Calling Tollfree 1800 from Malaysian fixed line number

    Calling from real fixed line or IP phone will not be charged, according to our experiment with TM and YTL broadband lines.

    Some users have been complaining that their fixed line was also charged when they call the tollfree number. However, users need to pay attention on their “fixed line number”. If it is a number assigned to cellular service, highly likely the number is a cellular number, hence you need to pay regular charges

    Calling tollfree 1800 from Malaysian unlimited call plans

    Most, if not all, Malaysian telcos offer unlimited call plans as part of their service offering to their customers. However, often times the service does not include free calls to 1800 number.

    Popular Malaysian telcos such as Maxis, Celcom, Digi offer plans with unlimited calls but users will find themselves still be charged when they want to call 1800 number from their line.

    Best answer? Check with the respective telcos

    It is best if you check with the telco(s) before you subscribe. The same tips also applies if you want to check whether the service comes with a Public IP address or not.

    The best way is to get answer from the telcos themselves. Otherwise, if you are looking at a quick answer to your queries, just hit their customer service number and direct your queries to available service personnel.

    If you are TM or Unifi customer, you can visit TM Cyberjaya if you require support assistance in person.

    Home Networking Guide 2021: Malaysian Edition

    If you are looking for information on setting up and optimise your home network, then you are in the right location. Read on to discover more about our Home Networking Guide: 2021 Edition.

    As more people are working from home, a properly set up home networking is a must, especially when we have important online meetings to attend or need to give presentations. Home networking equipments need to be reliable and on par with their office counterparts. While the price does not have to be expensive, the equipment should accommodate the number of devices connected at home.

    Other than performance, people should also be concerned about security and reliability. In this guide, we will share more on optimising your home networking to ensure that you get the best in value.

    Home Networking Guide: 2021 Edition – The Setup

    Setting up a good network at home depends on the two parameters below:

    Number of devices: You need to get a good router if you are having connection for more than 10 devices.

    Internet connection speed: You need to get a good router if your internet connection is 100Mbps or more. For speeds of 30 Mbps and below, the regular router given by your ISP is sufficient already for most tasks.

    Specific network requirements: If you run local file streaming or transfer a lot, then you probably need to invest in having a Gigabit connection.

    Internet Service Provider (ISPs)

    TM and TIME are the popular service provider.

    TM provides fibre internet service under the name unifi. Contact TM Customer Service for more information.

    WiFi 6: Do I Need It?

    If you have a lot of old devices (aged 3 years and more), then WiFi 6 is not a compulsory feature. Some of the settings don’t work well with older devices.

    Nevertheless, if you are looking forward to future-proof your network, WiFi 6 is the way to go.

    WPA3 Encryption

    WPA3 is the latest encryption standard available on the most recent WiFi 6 routers. To ensure compatibility with older devices, we recommend you to enable WPA2 encryption as well. On modern routers, it will be shown as WPA3/WPA2 encryption.

    Channel Allocation

    WiFi devices communicate with each other on a specific set of frequency. To ensure minimal interruption with many WiFi networks at the same location, they will choose a frequency from a set of frequencies available for WiFi use (example, bands in 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz frequency. Each of the pre-set frequency is called the “WiFi channel”.

  • Cooking Gas Price in Malaysia

    Cooking Gas Price in Malaysia

    In case if you are wondering how much is the cooking gas price in Malaysia, read on to find the answer. The Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) is one of the controlled item in Malaysia. Therefore, the price is monitored and regulated by the government.

    It is not a surprise if you found the LPG being sold at a higher price in grocery stores. This is because the price is often quoted together with delivery charge.

    Nevertheless, it is not legal to sell the LPG at above ceiling price set by the government. The sellers should be aware of this and clearly quote the delivery fee before purchase is made.

    Cooking Gas Price in Malaysia by Cylinder Size

    The price is determined by the Malaysian government according to cylinder size. The following are the prices (not including any applicable delivery charges).

    10 kg: RM 19.00

    12 kg: RM 22.80

    14 kg: RM 26.60

    The price is still correct as of January 2022.

    Subsidy by Malaysian Government

    In 2019, Public Accounts Committee (PAC) has tabled a PAC report on Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) Subsidy Management under Ministry of Finance (MOF). Some shocking findings were summarised as below:

    1. PAC found that there was no clear policy and procedure on issuance of LPG subsidies;
    2. PAC also found that there was no specific definition for the domestic use category;
    3. PAC also found that there was no limit on claimable amount that the six (6) subsidised LPG suppliers can make;
    4. PAC was given the testimonies that the subsidised LPG was sold to users such as laundry shop, hotel and restaurant operators;
    5. PAC was informed that there had not been any study on LPG consumption in the breakdown according to state, category and number of users, making it difficult for enforcement;
    6. PAC was informed that there was no data available regarding the leakage of the subsidised LPG which was smuggled out of the country, thus making it difficult to for enforcement to be carried out; and
    7. PAC was informed that according to Auditor General’s Department, an estimated leakage of government money of RM1.72 billion occurred in those three years from 2015 to 2017 due to failure in defining domestic users.

    Clearly, the Malaysian government has spent a huge amount on providing subsidy for LPG domestic users. We believe the domestic use of the cooking gas is meant for personal use at private residences only. However, the monitoring and enforcement of the subsidy can be tricky due to the sentiments involved, especially with small traders and stall operators.

  • Taco Bell, Cyberjaya

    Taco Bell, Cyberjaya

    Taco Bell Cyberjaya is a Mexican-themed fast food restaurant located at Persiaran APEC, Cyberjaya. It is located near to KFC Cyberjaya.

    Taco Bell Cyberjaya Outlet

    Taco Bell outlet at Cyberjaya was opened on Friday, 2 April 2021. Cyberjaya customers can get their taco fix here. When it was first opened, so many customers are queueing. This is not a surprise as the restaurant is the first Taco Bell outlet in Malaysia. The queue does not stop, even when the Malaysian government imposed strict Movement Control Order or total lockdown. However, the number of people patronising the restaurant saw a decline.

    This outlet features a glass window by their kitchen. While you are waiting, you can see what the crews are doing at the kitchen.

    Taco Bell Menu

    Check out the menu snapshot below for their current offerings.

    Beverage selections include Taco Bell Sparklers, Coffee & Tea (Hot and Cold), and Pepsi. Additionally, dine-in customers get free refills for Pepsi.

    Ordering at Taco Bell

    If you are ordering take-away, you will be given a “coaster pager” which vibrates when you order is ready. There is minimal dine-in space at the ground level of the restaurant. We are unsure whether this is to accommodate with the new norm post-COVID-19 or it has been designed that way.

    Update July 2021: Due to current government restriction, dine-in is not available yet at Taco Bell.

    Taco Bell Food Delivery

    If you are not keen to go to the location to have your food delivered, you can also place your order online via Foodpanda delivery platform. Taco Bell Cyberjaya is now available on Foodpanda delivery platform and the delivery price is reasonable.

    Take-away Packaging

    Most of the orders will be packed in paper bag or container. As far as we know, no plastic bag will be given. For example, Nachos is served in a paper-based container.

    Other than regular tacos, customers can also try their burrito.

    Price: Expensive or Not?

    If you are used to buy Taco Bell from United States, you will find their Malaysian pricing to be a bit expensive. It is probably because of the ingredient cost here. Other than that, probably the portion is bigger here in Malaysia. Like many other international brands, the price point may not be what it seems.

    Check out their website here.
